Q. What is Proactive Papamoa process around rehabilitation?
A. We receive a referral from an ACC case manager, which is then picked up by one of our suitably qualified Lead Provider team members and actioned within 24 hours.
The case manager is informed and kept in the loop for the duration of the rehab contract.
The lead provider organises meetings with the client, employer, GP, surgeon and any other stakeholders and is responsible for planning and implementation of the rehab plan.
Team members from many different healthcare disciplines may be required to input into the program and feedback progress to the Lead Provider.
When the rehab goals have been met a completion report is sent back to the ACC case manager and the case is closed.

Q. Share with us a great work story
A. A teenage boy presented with pain in both knees, which had bothered him for 18 months.
He was a keen BMX competitor and had been receiving physiotherapy for what was considered to be a growth-related inflammatory condition, called Osgood-Schlatter disease.

Though he experienced some temporary relief from his previous physio, he was not getting any long-term improvement. He decided he needed a 2nd opinion and came and saw me.

Though he did have some local tenderness in his knees, on questioning, this was not the pain that was troubling him. His pain was sharp and debilitating and in both knees, simultaneously.
I began to investigate his spine and discovered that I could reproduce the knee pain he was complaining of, by pushing on a segment of his low back.
I ordered up XRays immediately and he underwent surgical repair, when it was discovered that he had a severe spondylolisthesis, which if left untreated may have resulted in serious trauma to his spinal cord.
